Caligari

The story here is to not believe everything that you see and that not everyone is out to get you. The film starts with Dr. Caligari and his sleepwalker and as soon as he comes into town the murders begin. It is easy to project blame onto those that we know nothing about. This film speakers it story without the use of words in the vocal form but uses them on screen to display as little words as possible, allowing the viewers imagination o run wild and put together inferences and  work through the movie with their imagination. Like all movies there is a climax and foreshadowing and plot twists with red herrings. In the final scenes we see Caligari taken away and then we see him return to his normal state and the other man taken back to the asylum. I think that this man was trying to cope with the fact that the girl did not love him so he killed his opposition and more and tried to blame someone else.

The set designs portray the old style movies with the lackluster color and the very odd make shift. Film making has received lots more money to expand over the years and innovate. This set had lots of ups and downs and lefts and rights it all looked like the same set just the direction changed a lot. This set showed that story telling has come a long way and that the storyline and film can still be good even if the set is lackluster. The film had a lot of relevance regarding trust and the truth and how not everything is quite as they seem. It also shows that you never truly know what is going on for someone. I would trace this movie to some of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies, all of the deception and choosing of love, but it also comes with murder and misdirection and lies. I think they are quite similar. I think the reliability of the narrator brought spice the film, in the Gatsby the ability to trust the narrator is also not present and makes the movie far more interesting. The nature of the film is misdirection much like our lives now, the world is ever changing.

  1. Hi Derek,
I agree with you that the sets seem reused or similar to each other throughout. It does show how far we have come since the start but it also shows their creativity and use of what they had in the beginning. I like how you tied the Pirates of the Caribbean movies into similar films/styles.
