Caligari

The story here is to not believe everything that you see and that not everyone is out to get you. The film starts with Dr. Caligari and his sleepwalker and as soon as he comes into town the murders begin. It is easy to project blame onto those that we know nothing about. This film speakers it story without the use of words in the vocal form but uses them on screen to display as little words as possible, allowing the viewers imagination o run wild and put together inferences and  work through the movie with their imagination. Like all movies there is a climax and foreshadowing and plot twists with red herrings. In the final scenes we see Caligari taken away and then we see him return to his normal state and the other man taken back to the asylum. I think that this man was trying to cope with the fact that the girl did not love him so he killed his opposition and more and tried to blame someone else.

The set designs portray the old style movies with the lackluster color and the very odd make shift. Film making has received lots more money to expand over the years and innovate. This set had lots of ups and downs and lefts and rights it all looked like the same set just the direction changed a lot. This set showed that story telling has come a long way and that the storyline and film can still be good even if the set is lackluster. The film had a lot of relevance regarding trust and the truth and how not everything is quite as they seem. It also shows that you never truly know what is going on for someone. I would trace this movie to some of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies, all of the deception and choosing of love, but it also comes with murder and misdirection and lies. I think they are quite similar. I think the reliability of the narrator brought spice the film, in the Gatsby the ability to trust the narrator is also not present and makes the movie far more interesting. The nature of the film is misdirection much like our lives now, the world is ever changing.

Overview Ch1. Film Evolution

Film has come so far over the years and it is very easy to forget where it started. The beginning of film started as we see in chapter one with the film from Thomas Edison of the first recorded sneeze. Though this scene was obviously very short it was able to replay an event or scene and people were able to relive that moment. After people started to see that these memories were able to be recorded and rewatched they began to evolve the production. In the beginning there was no sound and mostly miming and raw acting were in style but over time people wanted to be able to hear the events too.

After 1910’s the new normal began to have musical an thus musicals were created and we see that there are many examples of that in the text. There are examples such as The Jazz Singer or Suspense that both have at least some sort of musical accent to them or at least some sort of verbals. It is crazy to see how far film has come considering we started with fast turning pages and no words to so much more. We have movies and musicals a our finger tips available on our phones tv’s or iPads. These movies are full of effects that have been developed over time stemming from everything in this chapter, these movies paved the way for new cinema with soundtracks full casts volume, speaking, and singing. Now we are able to recreate anything from past to present to future and it all stems from the people who pushed the envelope and perused this new frontier.

Derek in a Nutshell

Who is Derek Olson? I enjoy many things such as playing golf for North Central College, watching movies, and hanging out with friends in my free time. Another hobby of mine is going on vacations and traveling with my family. Being able to see so many different areas of beauty and experience it with the people you enjoy the most is a rewarding experience.

Snowy was an interesting and fun film and it showcased a turtle named Snowy but the main hero as we discussed in class appeared to be the filming crew that flew to the UK. The crew met with an expert to see how they could encourage the owner of the turtle and the dad of the family, Larry, to provide a much more enjoyable environment for Snowy.

One of my favorite films is Avengers: Endgame. Endgame provides many pieces of cinematic genius, the cinematography and storytelling. The hero in end game is Tony Stark because he saves the whole world in the end by saving the 50% of the population that was zapped dead by Thanos and then back to life by Hulk. The great detail and special effect throughout the movie were amazing bringing great detail and likeness into each character. The climax was especially neat when the few hero’s left thought they were all alone to fight but the second snap before Tony’s brought everyone back to help fight for their cause. The movie drawls on all of the human emotions logos ethos and pathos making it a stellar movie and extremely enjoyable to many and not just myself!
